12:00 – 12:30 pm - Resident-focused lecture: Complicated case discussion with Liz Berry, MD (Associate Professor of Dermatology at OHSU) & Noah Hornick, MD, PhD (Assistant Professor of Dermatology at OHSU).
Dr. Berry has dedicated her career to treating patients with melanoma and those who are at high risk for the disease. She chose the field of dermatology because she believes that early detection of skin cancer is the best chance for a cure. Along with seeing patients, Dr. Berry has research interests in better understanding genetic risk factors for melanoma and future technologies that will better allow clinicians to identify skin cancers.
Dr. Hornick specializes in the set of skin problems that are unique to patients undergoing the treatment of cancers. His goal is to help patients and their oncologists anticipate, manage, and minimize the impact of these common problems during cancer therapy. In the laboratory, Dr. Hornick investigates the ways in which these medication reactions are related to other common skin diseases, which he believes will help inform the treatment of both.
12:30 – 1:30 pm – Patient case discussions
1:30 – 2:00 pm – Safeguarding Patient Interests & Physician Independence - a discussion with State of Oregon Representative Ben Bowman
Corporations, including insurance companies, private equity investors, and retailers, are investing in primary care at unprecedented levels. In the last ten years, investment rose 100,000% from $15 million annually to $16 billion. Corporate interests bring profit maximizing tactics to primary care, including surprise bills, staffing cuts, shorter patient appointments, and overbilling practices. To prevent the profit motive from having an outsized impact on patient care, Oregon, like many states, has historically banned the corporate ownership of primary care providers. Yet these protections have weakened over the decades, opening new loopholes. With this unprecedented rate of investment in the field, it’s time to update regulations to ensure doctors remain in control of patient care.
